The short version
- You play without an account. We never ask for your name, email or location.
- We keep a random player ID, your game progress, and a record of what happens in the game (listed below), so the game works and so we can make it better.
- Game events are kept for 13 months, then reduced to daily totals with no player ID, and deleted.
- We do not store your IP address or browser details with any of it.
- There are no third-party trackers, analytics services, advertising pixels or social buttons on this site. Our own server records the game events; nobody else sees them.
- Our server's logs record what the program did and what went wrong. They are deleted after 14 days.
Your player ID
The first time you play, our server makes a random ID for you and your browser keeps it (in this site's local storage, not a cookie). It is not linked to you as a person. If you clear this site's data, the ID is gone and the game starts fresh. Long Haul shows your ID under Help (the ? button).
Your progress
Our server keeps one record under your player ID, with:
- your wallet: fuel, credits, stars, cargo, Hangar upgrades and boosters;
- your progress: which jumps you have flown and your best result on each, where your ship is docked, the story scenes and tips you have seen;
- a ledger of every change to your wallet, with its time and the reason (a jump won, a trade, a booster used);
- the random numbers the server uses to deal fair boards, and when the record was last saved;
- the fun ratings you give, if you choose to: the jump and how many hearts (1 to 5), with the time. There is no free text.
That is what lets you carry on where you left off, and lets us check that every result is fair.
How long: your record is kept while the game runs, or until you ask us to delete it (below). Nightly backups of the server's database, on the server and on our own backup storage, are kept for 14 days, then deleted.
Game events
The server records these events at the moment they happen in the game. Every event carries your player ID, the game, where you played it (this site), and the time. Nothing else is attached.
| Event | What it records besides the above |
|---|---|
| Session start and end | How long you played |
| A jump started, finished or left | The chapter and jump, the outcome, stars, moves left, boosters used, how long it took, whether the game quietly added moves to help, and whether a jump you left counted as a loss |
| A story scene seen | The scene, and the choice you made in it |
| Running out of fuel | When the next fuel arrives |
| A tip or explainer seen | Which one |
| A new chapter reached | Which chapter |
| A daily reward collected | The calendar day and what it gave |
| A chapter chest opened | The chapter and what it gave |
| A fun rating given | The chapter, the jump and the number of hearts |
| Something bought in the game | The item, its price and what you paid, in game credits (or bars), and any sale; a jump skipped with bars counts as a purchase too |
| Store opened, checkout started, purchase paid or refunded | The item, its list price, the price charged and any sale (only if purchases are ever offered; none are today) |
| Ad offered or watched | The place in the game and the reward (only if ads are ever shown; none are today) |
| A gift or refund from us | The currency and amount, when our support team makes up for a problem or refunds a payment; never the reason they typed |
Why: to see where players get stuck or give up, to tune how hard each jump is, and to know whether the game is running well. We look at totals (how many players reached chapter 2, how often a jump is won), not at individuals.
How long: the raw events are kept for 13 months. After that they are rolled up into daily totals that contain no player ID, and the raw events are deleted. To count returning players, the server keeps each anonymous player id with the day it was first seen, deleted 13 months after the player's last visit. Nightly backups of the server's database are kept for 14 days, then deleted.
What we do not keep
- Your IP address, browser (user agent), device fingerprint, or any personal details are never stored with your progress or with game events.
- Our web server keeps no access logs. To slow down abuse, the game server holds the address a request came from in memory for a short while; it is never written to disk.
- The operator console keeps a one-way code derived from the network address of sign-in attempts, for 30 days, to stop password guessing. It never keeps the address itself. Like everything on the server, the code is also in the nightly backups, which are deleted after 14 days. (The operator console is the sign-in page our own staff use to run the game.)
Server logs
The game server logs a line when it starts, and errors in the program (what failed and where in the code). These lines carry no IP address, browser details or player ID. A failed sign-in to the operator console logs the time and the one-way code above, never the address. The web server in front of it logs only its own start-up, configuration and certificate renewals, nothing about your requests. All logs stay on our server and are deleted after 14 days.
Third parties
None. All the data above stays on our own server, which is hosted in Germany; we do not sell or share it. The site loads no scripts, fonts or images from anyone else.
Ads: this site shows no ads today. If we add them, an ad provider such as Google may use cookies under its own privacy policy; we will update this page before that happens, and say how to manage ad personalisation.
Purchases: nothing is for sale today. If purchases are offered later, payment is handled by our payment provider (Stripe): we receive a payment reference and the item bought, never your card details. We will update this page first.
Children
The games are not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, children included.
Deleting your data
Clear this site's data in your browser to remove your player ID from your device. To get a copy of what we hold under your player ID, or to have your progress and events deleted from our server, email the operator (above) with your player ID from Help. We answer within 30 days. Deleting removes your record, its ledgers, your game events, your fun ratings and the day you were first seen; payment and operator-action records are kept for accounting with the player id replaced by an irreversible code. Backups that still hold deleted data expire within 14 days after that.
